A funny thing happened to me on the way to middle age. The acting bug bit me, big time. In order to assess the damage, I went on The Love Connection with Chuck Woolery to see if I could hack it on a national show. I mean, how difficult could it possibly be? You go out on a blind date and discuss it on air. I should mention that I had to fill out a questionnaire, and one of the questions was, "What's your idea of a good first date?" Since the show stressed creativity, I put down "nude sailing". That must have worked because my date selected me, and we went sailing. Prior to the show and much to my relief, I was assured that Chuck wouldn't ask me if we were naked. He lied! Halfway into the show Chuck asked, "Were you both naked ... John?" I panicked, grabbed my glasses, and replied shakily, "I always keep my glasses on, Chuck." But Chuck wouldn't let it go, and the audience was loving it. So he said, "But on a blind date?" To which I replied, "That's why I keep my glasses on, Chuck." The audience was howling, and I was off the hook.
